Daisy Sturgill
modern farmer
a little about myself With a passion for plants, I applied to study under the Department of Horticulture at Virginia Tech in 2015. Not knowing where this interest would take me, I threw myself into numerous activities related to the field to gain real-world experience and to find what it was that I wanted to do. Watering at the Virginia Tech Greenhouses, harvesting at the Virginia Tech Hops Research Field, and farming on the Dining Services Farm at Kentland (now Homefield Farm) were my first delves into the horticultural field. It was at the Kentland Farm that I discovered my fervor for farming, and decided to further pursue this interest in my upcoming internship.
The summer of 2017, following my first year at Virginia Tech signaled the beginning of my time at Stonecrop Farm in Newport, Virginia. It was here where I was exposed to the beauty of floriculture for the local cut-flower market. In addition to working in the floral fields and design lab of Stonecrop, I found myself manning the blueberry booth at Bee Berry Farm in Newport, Virginia as well. Between early mornings at the Blacksburg Farmer’s Market for Stonecrop and spending weekdays weighing berries at the bustling U-Pick, I found a love for working both in the field and with the consumers. There is nothing quite as satisfying as seeing the fruits of your labor enjoyed by your community. Following graduation, I spent the 2019 growing season working at On the Mountain Farm in Warren, ME. The experience gained from working on such an intensive, no-till farm while also living totally off-grid is invaluable. Thanks to my wonderful mentors at Kentland, Stonecrop, Bee Berry, and OTM Farm, I have a strong foundation of farming know-how. It is with great excitement my partner Jesse and I begin to sow our own seeds in Southwest Virginia for the 2020 growing season. We will be using what we have learned from our experiences to provide our community with delicious produce and stunning flowers, grown with love. |
